Growing up in Kansas City, I learned early that school could be magical—and deeply frustrating. I was a neurodivergent, gifted learner navigating a system built for compliance, not curiosity, and for a long time, I thought the problem was me. With 15+ years in education—as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, district administrator, college professor, and now elementary principal—I've seen that same story play out in thousands of students. Then I saw it in my own children, and everything shifted. I stopped trying to improve the system and decided to build something different. Wonder Lab Academy is a learning environment designed for students who need more: more challenge, more cultural connection, more room to think, question, and lead. Here, curiosity is the foundation, brilliance is expected, and individuality is the standard. Students like me won't have to wonder if they belong. They will know.
